Welcome to the Archaeoastronomy Database

The Archaeoastronomy Database facilitates the gathering of crowd-sourced data relating to possible connections with the sky that may have been intended by ancient cultures in the material remains that have survived to this day. Although in many cases intentionality can never be 100% proven, it is hoped that looking at the possibilities and gathering objective data might contribute to our accumulated knowledge and perhaps lead to later inferences about the past.
To do this the Archaeoastronomy Database is set up to receive data in the form of submitted sites, investigations, and observations. Submitted sites are intended as a way to gather basic information about a location and how to get there. Investigations are submitted and connected to a site along with detailed instructions on a possible astronomical connection and how/when to record information to test the proposed possibility. Finally, multiple observations can be contributed towards submitted investigations when participants are able to get to a site and record the data.
All of this information can be sorted and searched in the Archaeoastronomy Database Explorer to help build up information about the sites, check if investigation ideas are already in place and add to them as needed, and especially to find observations participants can and would like to attempt to make and contribute.

To get started, click the button to open a copy of the Archaeoastronomy Database Explorer. This tool is currently in the form of a Google Spreadsheet that links to the information in the database. In addition to the data itself, it includes current stats on the data, links for submitting information, and further instruction on use of the database to construct investigations or to find observations to conduct.
